Use it from ChatGPT
ChatGPT can deploy to gangway the way Claude Code and Codex do: you add gangway as a custom connector, sign in once, and ChatGPT gets the same tools. What it makes lands on your server, on your domain, not on ChatGPT Sites.
Before you start
Section titled “Before you start”- A ChatGPT plan with developer mode. Custom MCP connectors need Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu. On Business and Enterprise, a workspace admin may have to allow them.
- gangway reachable from the internet. ChatGPT calls your MCP URL from OpenAI’s servers, so
https://mcp.<your domain>/must answer from outside your network. Alocalorlaninstall, or one behind a VPN only, cannot be used from ChatGPT. See Choosing a mode. - MCP turned on, under Admin → Server → Surfaces.
1. Turn on developer mode
Section titled “1. Turn on developer mode”In ChatGPT, open Settings and turn on Developer mode. It has been under Apps & Connectors → Advanced settings and, more recently, Security and login; OpenAI moves it now and then.
2. Add gangway as a connector
Section titled “2. Add gangway as a connector”Under Settings → Apps & Connectors, choose Create and fill in:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Name | gangway |
| Description | Deploys apps and artifacts to my server |
| MCP server URL | https://mcp.<your domain>/ |
| Authentication | OAuth |
ChatGPT registers itself with a Client ID Metadata Document, which gangway accepts; there is no client ID or secret to paste.
3. Sign in and approve
Section titled “3. Sign in and approve”ChatGPT opens gangway in your browser. Sign in, and gangway asks you to approve ChatGPT and choose
its scopes, as for any agent. Pick artifacts if you
only want ChatGPT to deploy static sites and artifacts, and touch only what it deployed itself.
ChatGPT is then listed under Account → Connected agents, where you can disconnect it.
4. Use it
Section titled “4. Use it”Start a new chat, turn on the gangway connector for it, and ask for something:
Make a one-page report on last quarter’s signups and put it on gangway.
ChatGPT deploys and replies with the URL. Ask for a change and it redeploys to the same URL. gangway’s MCP server sends every client the same instructions for its templates, so documents, decks and boards come out in your theme whichever agent made them.
If it does not connect
Section titled “If it does not connect”- ChatGPT cannot reach the server. From a machine outside your network, run
curl -i https://mcp.<your domain>/. gangway answers405 Method Not Allowed, since MCP wants a POST; anything else, or no answer, means ChatGPT cannot reach it either. Check your reverse proxy and DNS. - Sign-in stops on a gangway error page. The page says why the client was refused.
- The tools are listed but every chat fails. Upgrade gangway; v0.1.0 published tool schemas ChatGPT could not read.
- Something else. See Troubleshooting.
